Same personality test, 8 years later

I have always had fun filling up tests, especially about myself.

There is this test, Personal DNA which have been around for quite a long time and, for some odd reason, keeps getting upgraded with functions that don't work. That ATTAP company responsible for it has no contact info and no way to know what's happening there... Creating account doesn't work, to begin with its issues.

But it's still the best personality test I've ever seen! It takes about 30 minutes to complete, it's very extensive and even if you take it twice in a roll you won't have the exact same results. So it is quite subjective indeed. It also brings some typical personality info that I like to compare to horoscope. It's just a lot of mumble jumble, such as "You are well-attuned to your talents, and can deal with most problems that you face.".

 The coolest part about it, I think, is the 13 personality traits. It's represented in a weird colorful map and later dissected point by point. They claim:

Each bar indicates the percentage of test takers who entered a lower value for that trait than you did. For example, if Confidence is at 80, that means that 80% of people entered lower values for confidence questions than you did. Based on a sample of 30,000 users

If that's true, and if there is indeed enough people taking the test, that's wicked cool!

Almost half of my traits changed a lot over those last 8 years. Most didn't. I'd assess they are all basically true!

For the 6 big changes: seems like I'm extremely less open to new experiences than I was, this means I'm ready to choose and do stuff; a lot more extroverted and outgoing, awesome; got much much more empathy towards others thoughts and emotions, yeah baby; and trust a lot less in others, so I think now think most people aren't good at heart (nor bad for that matter), because I actually believe most people are just zombies (more on that to another blog post, maybe). I also believe much less than I already did in agency, in other words, how much me or anyone can change the future - I indeed now believe we can't, just like we can't change the past; and I became much less interested in how things look while much more interested in how things work, though I always prefered functionality over aesthetic, the previous test showed I cared much closer to 50 50, while now it's almost 0 to looks.

For the rest of 7 little changes, some of which may be insignificant: a little less confident about expressing my opinions, which I like to translate as less confrontative without necessity; little less masculinity and little more femininity, which is good because I was too extreme in both stereotypical traits before; a little more spontaneity reaching the awesomeness of being comfortable with having no plans; little less attention to style or fashion, which is quite irrelevant as I never gave any attention to how my own dressing style looks, although I eventually might; little more authoritarianism, favoring the order and the law a little more, but still not so much; and very little less earthy, or more imaginative - I've always loved theory and abstraction, but I still prefer practice way much more. Many people may find this last one weird, as many mighty say I dream too much.

What I do find bad about this and all other similar tests is exactly this... From my point of view, I got better in every single one of the 13 aspects. I worked to get better, and I did, and I'm glad to see it reflects in such a test. But, in both tests, they say I'm something awesome. How did I go from "Respectful Leader" to "Free-Wheeling Analyst"? That doesn't seem to reflect the improvement I've made, nor to reflect what I was or what I am. This whole "feel good" horoscope part of it is terrible! I'd like to see "You're a spoiled kid" result for a change, which can actually teach us in what we can or should improve to engage in social norms and / or to learn how to know ourselves.

In any case, there. That was my " having fun with a personality test" for today! :-P

Filosofando um pouco sobre céticos, cientistas, medicina e alienígenas

Seguindo minha linha de escrever posts em vez de emails para o nerdcast, encontrei mais este assunto.

Há muito tempo atrás escrevi um email sobre o nerdcast 369 "Profissão Médico" e não consegui fechar para enviar... Daí veio o episódio mais recente, 409 "Alienígenas do Passado" e me lembrei do primeiro email e resolvi ressucita-lo. Vou dividir aqui em duas partes.

PARTE 1 - Médicos

Scrubs. Melhor produção sobre medicina que reflete a realidade. Gostaria de ter visto o que os médicos do episódio teriam a dizer sobre ela... Pra quem nunca assistiu, recomendo pois é também uma das melhores sitcom jamais feitas!

E quando quiserem ter uma boa noção sobre a ciência consolidada das coisas, aconselho começar a ouvir o podcast Skeptics Guide to the Universe (ou SGU). Homeopatia é apenas uma, das chamadas pseudo-ciências, mais criticadas por eles e a página em português do wikipedia revela que a preocupação que eles têm com esta porcaria é bastante relevante. HOMEOPATIA NÃO É CIÊNCIA! E sim, o artigo sobre ciência em português também está completamente defasado. Comece pesquisando em inglês, com a mente aberta, e logo verá.

E não é inofensiva. Não pode ser bom só por que parece não fazer mal. Uma forma que isso faz efetivamente mal: as pessoas as vezes trocam a medicina por esse tipo de lixo, e morrem sem sequer tentar procedimentos básicos que certamente poderiam ter salvado a vida caso tivessem optado pela ciência. Outra forma: vacinas. Pessoas deixam de tomar vacina e terminam causando indiretamente a morte de outras que não podem tomar a vacina. Sim, pseudociência MATA!

Vou fazer uma comparação aqui, para ilustrar a forma que vejo isso tudo.

- Uma pessoa "normal" quando pesquisa no google, se chegar a pesquisar, creio que leva cerca de 1 minuto, incluindo olhar o primeiro link que clicar e dar uma lida por cima de tudo.

- Um nerd pesquisando um assunto que já conhece, gasta 5 ou 10 minutos. Talvez até 1 hora. Olha a origem do link antes de clicar e já tem alguma noção de evitar coisas evidentemente inúteis.

- Um auto denominado cético como o pessoal do podcast que recomendei, via de regra, gasta horas ou dias pesquisando um assunto antes de pensar em falar a respeito. E ainda assim, fala com precaução.

- Um cientista pode gastar a vida inteira para pesquisar 1 único assunto. E descobrir no final que era um beco sem saída. O bom cientista está preparado para lidar com isso e com a completa falta de "sucesso" na sua carreira inteira.

Nessa escala, eu diria que sou um nerd de baixo calão, dificilmente gasto mais que 10 minutos pesquisando um assunto e o pessoal do nerdcast talvez estaria entre "nerds" e "céticos", excluindo o Azaghal. Já os homeopatas? Se perderam no meio do caminho e ficaram flutuando por aí. Certamente gastaram um bom tempo em se formar, mas nunca em pesquisar um assunto a fundo suficiente. Ou se perderam em alguma falácia lógica mesmo.

PARTE 2 - Alienígenas

Um dos melhores exemplos de cientista que se perdeu em falácias lógicas foi citado no último podcast mencionado. Michio Kaku. Quando um cientista começa a falar fora da sua área geralmente dá merda mesmo. Longe de ser o único, talvez seja o mais proeminente que ainda não se converteu completamente para força escura da pseudociência, mas está no caminho e acredito não ter mais volta.

Eu costumo concordar muito mais com o Azaghal do que com o Alotoni, mas neste episódio não deu. Sei que precisa ter conflitos para manter a veia cômica e talvez o Azaghal desta vez estivesse falando só pra provocar isso mesmo. Nem alienígena nem sequer UFO não existem, dentro do nosso radar científico. Infelizmente. Da mesma forma que não existe homeopatia. Explico.

Tudo isso é formado por milhares de pessoas que se perderam nesse caminho da ciência. E ciência, se ainda não percebeu, não é nada fácil!!

Vamos começar do começo.

Ciência (do Latin scientia, traduzido por "conhecimento") é uma "empresa sistemática" que constrói e organiza conhecimento na forma de explicações testáveis e predições sobre o universo. Num significado mais antigo e muito próximo, "ciência" também se refere ao corpo de conhecimento em si, do tipo que pode ser racionalmente explicado e confiavelmente aplicado.

Uma das principais consequências desta definição é que um conhecimento científico precisa ser replicável. Mas já volto nisso. Tem aqui um vídeo excelente que mostra algo que você certamente imaginava que era simples, mas conforme vamos prestando atenção aos detalhes vemos que de simples tem nada. Qual é o "nível do mar"?

Qualquer detalhe perdido nisso, medirá o "nível do mar" de forma errada. Se você não estudar suficiente para fazer isso certo, vai errar! E deixar de estudar um assunto mais a fundo é tentador. É humano. Eu não tenho saco pra isso. Os poucos que tem, os cientistas sérios, fazem isso tudo. E depois, para saber se fizeram certo, colocam tudo que fizeram na comunidade, para ver se mais cientistas conseguem replicar os resultados. Quanto mais se replica e se confirma, mais força o estudo ganha. Foi assim com o Darwin.

E não é assim com homeopatia. Muito menos com qualquer um desses estudos sobre OVNI. Tem alguns links no episódio do nerdcast, como este do Richard Dolan. Rídiculo. Ele só tem relatos e se baseia nos relatos! Nada na ciência é baseado em relatos. Precisa replicar! E o estudo em si, precisa ser meticulosamente registrado. Por que um dos outros principios básicos da ciência é que nossa memória e todos outros nossos sentidos são extremamente falhos. Não vou nem detalhar este assunto aqui, mas são. Comece a registrar qualquer coisa que você faça depois tenta lembrar. Daí olha no registro. Vai ver que sua memória estava errada. É um teste simples que ninguém faz. E ela está errada não só por que nossa memória é fraca, mas também por que pode ter sido armazenada errada desde o começo, por ter visto uma ilusão ótica. Também pode ter sido misturada com falsas memórias. Etc.

Se algum dia um alíenigena vier a terra, encontrar alguém, dar Oi e ir embora e nada for filmado, algo como no filme E.T., a ciência jamais reonhecerá isso como uma evidência. Ela não é perfeita, é apenas a melhor ferramenta que temos para evoluir nossa tecnologia. E, graças a ela, é cada vez mais improvável que esse alien apareça por aqui sem ser filmado! Infelizmente, graças a ela também, é cada vez mais díficil aceitar sequer uma boa filmagem como sendo real - mas existem formas de identificar se um vídeo foi editado ou não.

Enfim, gostaria muito que o pessoal do nerdcast aproveitasse mais essa oportunidade que conseguiram criar em educar o povo brasileiro e talvez conseguir quebrar alguns paradigmas do conhecimento por aqui. Pra mim, este da ciência seria o mais importante deles.

Why is it so difficult for a technology to be simple?

Disclaimer: This is a not so long but very dense text, like most of what I write. You can't just glance your eyes to read it.

I am a former programmer, a person who proposes to work hard to simplify computer processes. And I think most of us overlook "simplicity" way too much. I know I did overlook it many times, and I probably still do, despite all my efforts.

I'm currently struggling a lot on finding a perfect and simple solution for "bookmarking", in lack of a better term. It's not just bookmarking, though, as that implies having broken links. I want no missing data. So I want to save an offline / personal copy for at least 10 years. Know when I saw it. Share it. Search with keywords or date. Browse thumbnails. Etc.

I've tried delicious, google bookmark and +1, old extinct xmarks and its new lastpass version, all those tools you associate with "bookmark". But I'm also using dropbox, calendar, twitter, youtube history, ifttt, just to give you some examples and maybe an idea of what I actually mean and what I actually want to find. Maybe there is such a tool out there, but it's certainly not associated enough with the whole bookmarking concept and I still couldn't find it after a couple of days.

For another instance, I'm also recently struggling to find an awesome text editor. Yeah. Your read it right. Text editor. Awesome one. Offline. Collaborative. Powerfull. Reliable. Clean. It doesn't exist. Not yet. Not anything close to it. When I started searching for one, I thought I'd be able to find one easily. I overlooked it.

Now going back some years... since my first smartphone, an iPhone 3GS, I can't find a phone that will give me all the simple things I want. Share files. Hear music. Record callings. Battery life. Among others. I hardly can believe how this also doesn't exist yet. Even Apple, being so good with keeping a checklist, still couldn't do it. I currently own a Moto Razr HD, which still lacks power on all "simplicity" I've mentioned there, but at least it works much better (in general) than any iPhone ever did, for those "simple" tasks. Granted, gadgets are way more complicated to build than software. I'm just trying to explain in general terms what "simple" means to me, and why it is indeed difficult to build "simple" stuff. And I think Apple, Google and even Nintendo are masters at doing that, in general.

With that, I hope you can now see there are lots of difficulties in being "simple"!

I think the most important one is: "simple" isn't opposite to "complex", which isn't synonymous of "complicated". We constantly develop technology to simplify things for us, since the first wheel or pen. But the more it simplifies, the more complex it needs to be. And building up a solid complex tool for us, highly subjective individuals, is quite complicated.

Even building something apparently as simple as a bookmarking tool is something extremely complex. Extremely. That is if you have the degree of exigence I do.

So...

If you are doing any attempt to build up technology to simplify our lives, please, take a step back. Look at the whole picture. As most of us usually do, you're also probably doing it wrong. I believe for some people all it takes to do it right is just being more careful.

For Apple, the iPhone is actually very close to the whole "simple" concept I try to explain here. But almost all of its issues are actually limited thanks to some legal issue. All, except battery. Just make a bigger phone with a smaller screen! Call it "iPhone Pro". Not everyone uses it so much, but for lot of us who do, we care about it lasting a whole day with heavy usage more than anything else.

For me, I know I'm so bad at it I just gave up on trying. Just hope this isn't too hypocritical.

Film developer

A lot has changed in my life and plans in the past 3 months. I've already wrote 2 posts about it, in portuguese. And, then again, my plans keep on changing...

I started the year thinking it would be yet another year at the office. I had worked for 2 years in the same company. I thought I was stabilized there, I would grow up there. I'd think "Finally a nice company with nice people who appreciate my work". January 4th. Fired. No reason given, no questions asked. I just walked away, in shock. Shocked big time.

Now I want to leave my country. I really do. For at least 10 years I've been trying.

I never liked borders or flags. But if I were to choose one to be patriot about, I'd choose the olympics flag. I think it's the closest we got to a "flag of human being". When you're in a bad neighborhood, which means one you don't fit in, you just move out. We can't change people's mind, we can't make people around us to act as we wish. We can only keep moving in hope to find a place we fit in.

There might be somewhere in my country where I do fit in. It is a big place, after all. But I've been around the world. I know what I want. And I know there are better places to seek for somewhere I can call home before Brazil. For too many reasons I won't dig in here anymore.

So I tried making plans. Straight moving out is a far fetch dream. Most countries won't take me. I'm no big shot. Got no money to invest. I hardly could afford a few months of studying and living in most places, which still is the best chance I have to get a long enough stay visa. I got no family financial support, we're all poor. I do have a family living in the US, but it can still take another 10 years for my green card to come out. Until then, I can't even get a tourist visa to visit my mother. It's ludicrous.

I had to shoot lower. I thought trying to use my experience and looking for freelancing. If I could make a living online, I could move out at least from my home city, thus making a smaller step towards moving out of the country. Well, that plan is also going bad. Competition is too fierce online. I've managed to make 8 bucks so far. But maybe there's an extra reason I couldn't make this work yet... I got a dream, which may be bigger than my will to find a home...

Intermission

Just a regular Damme day

I want to make a film! Even more, I will make a film.

Not just produce, and I'm no actor, director or writer. But I want to develop it. Participate in all those aspects, and a few more. With no budget in sight, of course. This plan has everything to fail so far. Then I've also got no experience with any of this at all!

Except I just did get some expertise culminating in this short so far: Just a regular Damme day. Which won nothing, had very little views and no comments. But it was a good experience for 1 week. My first experience with video cameras since I was a little kid.

Then, to try and have a better chance of actually making the filme, I paused both my other plans (freelancing / building a software company) which I can fall back to later on, if needed.

While I was writing this text I began working in a new project to another contest, which again had everything to "fail", and may even not come out of paper. But at least it will help me learn a bit more and eventually enable me to fulfill my dream.

Now my next step is writing a freakingly awesome screenplay. For that I found many great writings:

1. Are you sure you want to be a screenwriter?
2. Here's a general process from a novel writer trying to make his first film.
3. And here's a very short and nice general process from wikihow.
4. Then take some great advice comparing writing film and novel from a experient filmmaker.
5. If that wasn't enough, here's much more advice from even more filmmakers.
6. Also, be sure to keep it human, maybe reading some books about our behaviour.
7. After everything else is done, be sure to format the screenplay properly. There are many rules.

I guess I could condensate (unlike this "book" I'm yet to read) all I learned from those in 1 line:

Keep trying. Again and again. Read. Write. Again and again.

In other words, work non-stop with what all you've got. No stop.

Then I don't plan to submit it to a studio. No. I want to find at least 1 famous person willing to support the cause, then make a small video to begin harvesting the internet. Crowdfunding! Yeah! After all, I'm sick and tired of bosses, remember?

I hear lots of people say making the screenplay is the easy part. I beg the differ. To make a freakingly awesome one is the hardest part. And I will begin by doing just that! Scary stuff.

How I got my usa tourist visa denied for the 3rd time

I'd argue most statistics on getting a tourist visa here in Brazil will show there is about 97% approval rate. I wonder what's the chance of having it denied 3 times, along almost 6 years.

Imagine no countries. Just imagine. Then move on.

My latest previsions about "last time I apply for a tourist visa" are about as good as anyone else's. I never wanted to try it again, but I wasn't counting my brother would be willing to pay me to try. And I was also very surprised by how it was denied to me this time. The 3rd time.

A lot has changed on the consulate from previous time I applied about 4 years ago. Most of my web links from my previous post are now broken. The web site changed everything, seems like. The whole process did change a lot. If the current process was the same in 2006, I could have renewed my visa, which would now be valid until 2016 without even needing an interview. It's also now possible to schedule new interviews one after the other in less than a week. With that, something that was impossible is now possible: someone was denied the visa, tried again 1 week later and got it.

There's still the myth that soon Brazilians won't need tourist visa anymore. Looks like this myth might even be getting stronger, but I think it's just a myth. There's too much money on it (I've heard 3 thousand interviews per day are made only in São Paulo, costing little more than U$100 each, and lasting for a few short minutes) and new consulates are being created in other cities. There's now a third party company, CASV, which was hired only to digitalize photos and fingerprints and thus optimize the consulate performance. So, there was many improvements and investments in this whole system...

But the consulate still is like hell.

I was there by 12:30, had my interview scheduled to 13:00 and only got to talk at 14h. Line after line. We can't even bring a cell phone turned off, not even a headset is allowed. No kind of gadget. If you don't want to talk with people in line nor die in marasm while standing on the line, bring a paper Sudoku. Also bring an umbrella because in some lines you may have no roof.

I still believe the main factor to approve or deny a tourist visa are their own data. In my case, I still have what they would call an extremely weak link (no job, no university, no cars, no house, etc) to Brazil and, to my first surprise, the interviewer justified in the end I also had way too strong links in the US (mother and brother).

It matters not I had traveled to several European countries and to New Zealand. And I came back. It matters not I'm in a very stable union for 5 years with a beautiful woman and she's very well employed here for at least 6, and I have not the slightest intention on divorce. Seems like such a union means nothing in the US. I've learned if you live together with your mate for 2 years, you're married for all legal means. And I do call her my wife.

It seems to also matter nothing I once had a tourist visa and I was legally in the US for 1 year and I came back - to keep it legal. I've worked there and my boss promised a work visa, which didn't happen.

I had 2 big reasons to believe this time would be different.

First, my brother sponsoring me. Not just paying the "small" fee, but also taking full responsibility for my stay. What else the US need? I had a tax paying US citizen willing to take all legal chances for me. This was huge to me but, to the consulate, it matters not. Or maybe they didn't know that much about him, as I thought they did...

The second reason actually mattered. Negatively. Once again, I've set my mind to "tell as little as possible". With that, I decided to try and simplify my whole "1 year legal stay", because I once believed this could have been an issue in the previous attempts. I'm not sure how simple of a process it is. So, this time, I said I was there for 1 month. I lied. And I kept on doing it - short and dry. He would ask "how long you stayed the last time" I said "1 month". Later on, near the end, he asked "how long you stayed there again?", I said "1 month". "Are you sure?". "Yes.". Smooth. I'm a dumbfuck.

That was just the way I rationalized how to simplify my story, keep it short. My previous interviewer would probably have asked to see the papers I had brought, once he realized how bad I sell myself. I had all money information they needed there and a signed letter from my brother proving his will to sponsor me. But I didn't show it to him. And he didn't ask. After that, he just told me "Your visa was denied, you got too strong links there, too weak links here, and I know you stayed there for 1 year so you weren't cooperating with me".

"Do I have any say on that?" I asked. Still on the fucking programmer mindset of being short, concise, trying to communicate with someone like me. But I'm not normal. I don't really "get" people. I got many reasons I want to leave my country and one of them is I don't connect with so much lack of caring. People here don't care about other people. I care a whole lot more than you, my dear reader, probably ever did or will. I'm stupid like that. He said "no, it's done". I left. Stupid again.

There. I had my tourist visa to visit "the most armed country in the world" denied for the 3rd time.

Look, I know that's his job. I know he interviews hundreds of people per day. I know it's humanly impossible to be fair with everyone there. But he took that job. He wants to be that guy. He knows he will be unfair to a lot of people. And he doesn't care. He didn't look me in the eye, once. He didn't try to see my point. He didn't bother to help a honest human fellow just trying to be free. After all, why would he care?

I also know I lied. But he didn't know that for sure. No matter what technique he used, he can't know for sure. Proof of this is the number of bigger liars that get approved through the same process, and go on to immigrate illegally. He basically called me a liar, without knowing for sure. And gave me no explicit chance to reply. That is just terrible work for U$100. Terrible.

I'd go as far to say this whole process is committing a huge crime against the US of A, staining the country, the human race even, and also making enemies for no good reason. It's not like this process is properly filtering illegal immigrants. It isn't. So I don't know why it exists, but I know in my skin it is making enemies. I've met that feeling of hate there. I believe there is such a thing as verbal and emotional violence and it is considered a crime, isn't it? Maybe I'm wrong...

In any case, why not paying more attention to these small things?

Despite all of that, this time I didn't hate that guy behind the glass wall. I hated myself. He made me feel miserable. I made me feel miserable. I think I only got denied this time because of my own lack of communication ability.

Best advice I can give to anyone who is trying all this: First time applying? Got family there? Lie your ass off and relax. Do not be nervous. They're not that good to identify lies, most of them won't even look into your eye and they use very old techniques to try and make you nervous. And if you do get nervous, they'll likely assume you're lying. That's their parameter. Also, apply the tourist visa before you apply for a green card from your family. Else, you won't be able to visit them until the green card comes. Retarded? Yes. Welcome to Sao Paulo US Consulate.

For all rest, like in my case, just talk to any specialist, such as this: http://www.vistos-americanvisa.com.br/site/

I think if I went on and tried again, I might be able to get lucky with a better interviewer and I might be able to express myself better, show my documents, say "Yeah I do have strong links, reason why I want to visit them! Yeah, I do not have a car nor a house in my name, but since when those are strong links? How many 'tourists' who do have those and you approve are now illegal in the US?", and that might be enough. It would make a great story.

But I also think it's just not worth even 1 buck trying again. I love my family, and I still love my planet with all problems it has (resumed to a lot of terrible human beings). And, as such, I now think I have to stand a point to never support this moronic consulate again. The whole process is way too expensive in every sense of the word.

After all this info, if you know you can get it the first time, and you really need to go to the US, I suggest you go and try. You probably will be just fine. Else, just choose another place to go. Most countries aren't this hypocritical. They actually give us the freedom to come and go.

Quer comprar algum produto online? Vai entregar aonde?

Já adianto: o serviço de caixa postal do correios é uma merda e, além disso, não serve neste caso. Tem uma claúsula (10.6) escondida no contrato que diz "Não serão aceitos nas Agências de Coreios, para depósito em Caixa Postal, objetos que não forem postados na Empresa Brasileira de Correios e Telégrafos - ECT". Em outras palavras: só aceitam SEDEX! E, talvez, alguns envios por correios internacionais.

Vamos pedir pros vizinhos / amigos próximos então! Aposto que isso funciona pra muita gente...

"Ah, pede pra entregarem num horário que você esteja", ok, não quer problemas / preocupações. Respeito.
"Sim, posso ajudar claro, mas nada muito grande por que meu escritório aqui é pequeno", justo.
"Sem problemas, mas manda tudo no meu nome por que o porteiro é chato pakas no meu prédio", paciência.

Pois é. Não tem solução com conhecidos. E não existe empresa que preste o serviço direito. Na verdade, só existe os correios! Se você for procurar, talvez termine encontrando uma tal de MBE, Mailbox Etc. Mas o telefone não atende. Talvez encontre a UPS, que diz trabalhar com a MBE. Mas não trabalha. Não prestam esse serviço.

URL hacking for the rescue! You can append &list=UL to the end of a video URL from that user.

So, if you have:

You could also add something like this to your bookmark and simply click on it:

Select it then drag and drop it on your bookmarks. I couldn't figure out how to properly href it here in stackexchange! :(

The only "issue" with this is that it will make a list always in the same weird order.

Caminhando para um horizonte ainda distante

Menos de 1 mês desde meu último "plano" e já vi que provavelmente não conseguirei sair daqui a qualquer custo. Falta capital. Pelo menos não sem um visto de trabalho. Isso significa que talvez conseguiria ir para Nova Zelândia, onde o visto de trabalho seria possível caso encontre um empregador interessado primeiro... Mas NZ continua sendo um dos últimos casos de backup, por se tratar de uma ilha isolada e distante... Apesar que talvez fosse o lugar ideal.

De toda forma, pensei num outro plano mais sensato. Buscar uma forma de me sustentar online. 100%, sem precisar de qualquer presença. Assim poderei, no mínimo, sair de São Paulo para qualquer cidade melhor. E em breve, quando sair algum visto para morar fora, a transição dependeria somente de arcar com os custos básicos de ir até lá, encontrar uma casa e montar um pequeno escritório em casa.

Comecei a estudar online no edx.org e farei o maior número de cursos possível, numa tentativa de me "graduar" extra-oficialmente, sem diplomas, apenas complementando qualquer conhecimento que acredito estar me faltando e assim ter mais resultados na minha profissão de Ciências Computacionais.

E em breve montarei um portfolio por minha conta, já que até hoje nenhuma empresa conseguiu me ajudar a fazer algo que me orgulhe. Em menos de 1 semana já fiz um micro projeto do qual me orgulho mais do que qualquer coisa que fiz em qualquer outra empresa: http://www.cregox.info/caue/portfolio

E, a partir daí, ou no meio desse caminho, encontrarei algo que possa me sustentar sem precisar da minha presença. Talvez um home office / emprego a distância, como tantas pessoas já fazem. Talvez pegar vários projetos na linha do meu novo portfolio. Talvez uma idéia de algum novo serviço ou produto online, ou seja, montar uma empresa. Não sei ainda, e pouco importa. O que for surgindo irei fazendo, e melhorando, até chegar em algo mais próximo ao "último talvez", que dependeria menos da sorte e mais da minha própria competência em manter o negócio.

Novos horizontes

2 semanas atrás fui demitido de um emprego no qual estava ha 2 anos. 18 anos atrás comecei a trabalhar com computadores, na maior parte do tempo foi programação. Este foi o primeiro emprego, neste tempo todo, em que fiquei por 2 anos. E esperava ficar mais, crescer junto com a empresa... Foi o primeiro também que eu quis ficar.

A demissão foi sumária. Sem aviso prévio, sem conversa, sem qualquer motivo. Não me falaram, não perguntei. Do jeito que foi feito, perdi o interesse na empresa de forma tão imediata quanto veio a notícia repentina.

Cansei.

Cansei deste país. E meu próximo passo será sair daqui para um lugar melhor, a qualquer custo.

Aqui nada é levado a sério. Nem mesmo as pessoas! Faz parte da natureza local - muito antes de fazer parte da cultura. Acontece que eu levo tudo muito a sério, principalmente as pessoas. Assim, não me encaixo aqui. Nunca me encaixei. Um bom lugar para tirar férias, basta manter distância de São Paulo, e olhe lá.

Enfim, tomei esta decisão há poucos dias, e ainda estou amadurecendo ela.

Quem puder me ajudar nesta mudança, por favor, sou todo ouvidos.

Meu primeiro objetivo está em ir para um país que fale inglês, na Europa, como Holanda. Cogito também, ainda que não conheça, Irlanda (ou qualquer um do Reino Unido), Alemanha e até mesmo os 3 nórdicos e Austrália. Outros que também estou disposto a tentar incluem: Suíça, EUA e Nova Zelândia. Chega de "pensar pequeno"! :)

Meu "plano", por hora, é buscar um curso que me permita trabalhar para me sustentar, até encontrar uma forma boa de renda. Espero que seja possível em pelo menos 1 deles fazer isso.

Meu passeio na Nova Zelândia - parte 1

Estava escrevendo isto como e-mail para o nerdcast, pois fiquei com vontade de compartilhar (e relembrar da) minha história lá, mas vi que ia ficar muito grande e decidi colocar aqui. Acabou que ficou extremamente gigantesco! Então farei por partes... Segue a primeira.

Kiwano, nada a ver com kiwi

...

Em 2009 minha esposa estava querendo aprender inglês e finalmente decidiu tentar um curso fora, por 1 mês. Primeiro pensamos nos EUA, mas tive meu visto negado por ter família lá (longa história). Daí Canadá, mas tive o visto negado por tabela. Então, por que não Inglaterra? Mas daí seria Europa e pensamos que 1 mês seria muito pouco pra aproveitar o passeio. Por fim surgiu a idéia de Austrália e Nova Zelândia. Optamos pela segunda por ser mais barato e, se bem me lembro, mais fácil de entrar. Até então, tudo que eu sabia sobre kiwis é que eram uma fruta.

Aqui "abro um parêntesis": assisti todos Senhor dos Anéis, não gostei de nem 1, e nem do Hobbit, nunca li os livros e nem sequer sabia que aquelas 2 ilhas existiam. Ou seja, fui pego de surpresa duas vezes ao chegar. Primeiro por que o país é fantástico. Tem muita paisagem diferente, distanciadas por curtos caminhos! Depois, ao ficar sabendo que lá era a tal terra dos elfos e halflings modernos. Afinal, gosto deste universo todo, joguei RPG quando criança, e talvez até por isso achei as histórias do Tolkien muito batidas. Esperava por muito mais. Mas enfim...

Começamos a jornada, e todo planejamento, 1 mês antes das férias que vínhamos programando há mais de 6 meses - por causa de toda complicação de visto já explicada. Compramos a passagem na Argentina Airlines, para chegar em junho de 2010, pois era a mais barata e mais rápida. Parece que hoje não existe mais (como falaram na leitura de emails do nerdcast seguinte), mas na época foi excelente. Exceto pelo tempo de conexão de 2 ou 4 horas no aeroporto de Buenos Aires. Não lembro mais exatamente quanto tempo foi, mas foi suficiente para não podermos sair pra conhecer a cidade e termos que ficar esperando por uma breve eternidade.

Daí fica a dica #1: leve algo para fazer. Um livro, um kindle, um notebook com adaptador de tomada, baralho, pois provavelmente terá que ficar numa conexão destas e sem muitas opções. De tabela, fica a dica #2: hoje em dia (2013), não leve notebook pra fazer turismo fora do país. Se quiser mesmo, leve com a nota fiscal. A única boa opção. Pode ter muitas complicações na volta e o smartphone cumpre todas funções com o benefício adicional de trazer complicação nenhuma na alfândega. Se informe antes com relação a isso tudo, de qualquer forma. Na época não tivemos esse problema. Levamos o notebook e declaramos antes. Era mais fácil.

Mais um avião e 14 horas depois, chegamos em Auckland. Acho que apaguei da memória a demora que deve ter sido esse vôo... Enfim, durante 3 semanas ficamos em 2 hotéis diferentes. O primeiro havíamos reservado antes. Tem uma mini cozinha nele e, provavelmente, é a melhor opção para quem vai ficar mais de 1 semana na mesma cidade e ainda quer privacidade e conforto (que não teria em casa de família ou algo assim). Afinal, é bom poder comer uma comida feita em casa as vezes. O único problema foi a internet. Muito cara. Ficamos sem. Andamos um bom tempo pela cidade procurando outro lugar, mas não tinha outro com cozinha, tão bem posicionado (aquele ficava bem no centro e próximo da faculdade dela) e tão em conta. Então pegamos um hotel normal, que tinha wifi. Pelo menos tínhamos internet afinal! Enfim, não ficamos 100% satisfeitos com nenhum hotel, para recomendar.

Adorei a cidade. Todo movimento fica no centro, e dá para fazer tudo andando em longas caminhadas, ou pegar um dos excelentes ônibus circulares. Não chegamos andar de bicicleta, mas tem muita subida e descida. Seria bem defícil. Suspeito que mesmo hoje não deve ter muito disso por lá, ao contrário de São Paulo que começa a ter algo ou na Holanda que é no país inteiro... Lá fica tudo no centro. As avenidas são pequenas e o trânsito lá para na hora do rush. Por cerca de 30 minutos e, sei lá, 10km de trânsito talvez. Ou seja, não tem trânsito comparado para quem mora no caos de Sampa.

O que notei também é a quantidade de arco-íris. Das 3 semanas que ficamos lá, vi eles em pelo menos 5 dias diferentes, que me lembre. Devo ter tirado várias fotos de pelo menos 3 deles, mas tá difícil contar e encontrar. Um deles foi no maior parque que vimos, com campos de futebol e rugbi, e um grande museu (origem das fotos dos kiwis acima). Neste tem também muita coisa sobre a cultura Maori. Não foi algo que me interessou, apesar dos vários artefatos um tanto impressionantes, como a piroga.

Contudo, enquanto eu ficava brincando nos parques, minha esposa adorou a cultura Maori e foi atrás de saber mais. Mesmo assim, eu aprendi nada a respeito. Só fiquei sabendo que gostam de gritar e colocar a língua no queixo. Na parte de baixo do queixo! É mais fácil ver ao lado.

E, realmente, é um país de esportes radicais e, talvez Auckland seja o ponto central disso tudo. Nós não pulamos de bungee jump (infelizmente) nem de nada elástico, mas fizemos tudo que o orçamento e coragem mútua comportaram. Afinal, não estávamos esperando por tantas opções!

No meio disso tudo, foram centenas de fotos que gostaria de compartilhar e colocar ao lado do texto, mas no fim tem tanta foto que não consegui escrever suficiente nem para colocar as poucas que selecionei... Então, desculpe por este enchimento e pela péssima formatação. :-P

Continuando... 

Tinha a SkyTower, o elástico "Bungy" no meio da cidade (e perto da dita torre) e brinquedos um pouco além de infantis em vários parques espalhados. O vídeo ao lado mostra um dos melhores deles, com uma tirolesa gratuíta... O que nem é grandes coisa, mas imagino que seja fantástico para crianças! Aliás, algo que não vi por lá. A SkyTower era uma atração a parte. Visível de todos os pontos da cidade, praticamente, ela tinha 2 esportes radicais embutidos nela, um cassino e 2 restaurantes no topo. Fizemos apenas 1 de cada. Andar do lado de fora da torre (certamente muito mais legal e diferente que cair na corda) e comer no self service que não girava (e era mais barato).

Por fim, para nos despedirmos de Auckland, fomos de caiaque para a ilha vulcânica. O vulcão mais novo da região, pelo que me recordo de terem nos contado (talvez no Fergs, talvez no museu, onde tem uma sala dedicada ao mesmo vulcão...), com apenas cerca de 500 anos desde sua última atividade. Também não me lembro bem, mas era algo entre 3 a 5 km de remada, somando ida e volta. Saímos um pouco antes do almoço e voltamos pouco antes do Sol se por. Nosso guia, autor do desenho ao lado, fazia isso por esporte. Em dado momento ele estava com tanta pressa de não chegarmos tarde demais, que amarrou uma corda no nosso caiaque e puxou nós dois, ele remando sozinho. E ele aparentava ter uns 50 anos, bem conservado. Impressionante.

A ilha tinha rochas vulcânicas e cavernas que não tivemos tempo de visitar por termos pego o passeio mais econômico e curto. Fizemos uma caminhada até o topo de quase corremos todo caminho de volta. Lá de cima, que não era tão alto assim, podíamos ver a cratera, inteira encoberta de floresta, e Auckland com sua SkyTower no horizonte. Se tiver pique, é um passeio que vale muito a pena! Se não, pode pegar um dos navios que portam por lá... Daí já não sei se compensa tanto. A ilha é linda, mas nada de tão especial que me recorde.

No dia seguinte pegamos um meio de transporte para seguir viagem pelo resto do país. Optamos por um chamado de "campervan" e, no dia que locamos ela pelos próximos 10 dias, não tinha muita opção. Foi a van do senhor mesmo. Ainda tivemos um último empecilho. Paramos num estacionamento em Auckland para fazer umas últimas compras no centro e, ao tentarmos voltar pro "carro", o estacionamento estava já trancado. Cerca de 19h. Conseguimos entrar após algumas tentativas, quando alguém que tinha acesso ao prédio apareceu. E não foi logo a primeira pessoa.

Pra piorar, fomos ligar o motor, e nada. Bateria arriou. E começou a esfriar. Estávamos no inverno. Ficamos algo em torno de 2h esperando pelo guincho, que também teve dificuldade de entrar no estacionamento, quando chegou.

Uma vez que ele conseguiu entrar, foi só trocar a bateria (sim, teve que trocar) e seguimos viagem!

Alugar carro em Sao Paulo

fim de semana passado fui alugar um carro novamente, pela primeira vez desde que voltei da Europa, e percebi algumas diferencas...

o atendimento melhorou bastante, comparado aa ultima vez, ano passado, ha pouco mais de 6 meses. antes eu levava 30 minutos no balcao, mesmo tendo cadastrado e reservado previamente. desta vez foram cerca de 10 minutos. ainda demora muito, mas melhorou.

a devolucao continua demorada, mas nao muito. fazem a inspecao, faco o pagamento. mais uns 15 minutos.

a loja que fui (Unidas) tem taxi e onibus nas proximidades - importante se voce esta indo buscar ou voltando da devolucao. afinal, nao sera de carro! mas estava chovendo no dia e, para isso, as facilidades nao ajudam. tirando isso, nada realmente mudou la.

por fim, a experiencia num geral foi boa. mas ainda tive problemas com mais detalhes que percebi de diferente:

•  peguei o carro que estava disponivel, por coincidencia na 3a categoria mais barata. pelo preco, ele devia ter no minimo alarme (nao tinha) e ser bem mais automatico (fechar vidros, etc). na europa, paguei menos (mesmo depois de convertido) e alem de ter os adicionais mencionados o carro ainda funcionava muito melhor no transito. quando precisa parar, num farol por exemplo, ele desligava sozinho. e religava ao apertar a embreagem. nao sei o nome disso. era mais dificil morrer tambem, dependendo de quao rapido solta a embreagem. e nao reclamaria se tivesse cambio automatico. enfim, ainda tem muito que melhorar na frota.
• la tambem podia facilmente adicionar motoristas. bastava o locador ser o responsavel e poderia, por um pequeno adicional, deixar todo mundo como motorista se quisesse.
• e tinha carros para 10 pessoas. aqui no maximo encontramos para 7.

mas nisso, descobri algo que nao sabia que existia... locacao de carro com motorista! infelizmente as que existem online nao divulgam precos e pedem para consultar. ou seja, so pode ser caro pra dedeu.

dai entra tambem uma segunda nova area de locacao de carro, que parece ter somente 1 empresa fazendo por aqui: zazcar. aluguel por hora. ja estao ha anos por aqui, e continua sendo caro e com muito pouca disponibilidade de carros / locais para retirar. e ainda tem que retirar e entregar no mesmo local. mas melhorou e parece estar crescendo. talvez muito em breve comece a utilizar o servico deles... o maior problema, contudo, esta no preco da quilometragem. ainda nao sei se compensa exclusivamente por isso.

enfim, a dica por enquanto eh continuar pesquisando entre as locadoras. todas funcionam de forma muito similar e custos identicos. as que mais usei foram Unidas e Avis / Budget, mas ja usei outras e esta tem sido minha impressao.

Apple Checklist - In this episode, podcast players!

Simply put, why apple has such great products? Because they've got an amazing checklist to which they convey extraordinarily. Above all, that's why. To me at least.

It's not to say it's perfect. It's hard enough to pay around U$600 for getting a development license in Brazil and having to FAX and go through a 3 months process! Terrible!

But, for their products, the checklist is just as good as it gets. Like any other huge successful company, such as McDonald's, Coke or the Vatican's Church. They got everything covered. Right Pope? (see pic at side below)

Yet, I can't find on the web attempts to replicate their checklist. For anything!

In this instance, I was just trying to get a good podcast player on Android, and not even the top paid ones (I haven't tried them all, such as DoggCatcher or PocketCasts) seem to get any close to apple's checklist. I've tried BeyondPod, Podcatcher, ACast, the soon discontinued Google Listen, and the current runner up for me, Podkicker.

So here I'll be a little hypocrite and try to convey a simplified one (a true one must be detailed):

- Easy Accessibility, you know, for blind people or people who prefer to go blind. This is the first thing missing everywhere else (maybe can't be done since it should be intrinsic to android)
- Playing Management, amazingly enough, couldn't find a single player which can speed up or down the playing speed and just one could go back 30 seconds. Also none had some kind of easy seeking like iPods do. And hey, none of that is hard to implement at all! I know because, as a developer, I've done similar stuff. It's just about the checklist!
- File Management, not amazingly enough, they all get failures at this, including apples. Managing files and syncing them isn't an easy task. Dropbox (referral link)  excels at it, but that's another subject. Most of them, including iPods, have issues with trying to download again a failed download.
- Playlist Management, moving items back and forth, choosing what to play, eventually doing it automatically... Many items could go here, iPod gets almost every one right. The rest doesn't.
- Graphical User Interface (GUI), can't compete too much with apple here, but many get close enough. Use gestures, make things as simple as possible and with as much hidden text as possible. Use icons instead, add a small description and a help to elsewhere.
- Podcasts Caveats, some add info (plain text, for us users to read) in places you can find in any iTunes / iPod, but can't find in any other player. No idea what the standards are, but if there's any, it should with be who started it and do it good: iPods.

And that's all just from the top of my head...

Now, extrapolate all that to the whole iPhone and you might get an idea why Android is still trying to catch up... Even though, to me, it already did excel in other ways enough for me to drop the iPhone (for an Android Phone and an iPad).
